North Elementary
North Elementary is a well-oiled machine, a sonic vessel capable of both celestial voyages and earthen exploits. But just because you can set your watch by their output doesn’t mean the levers and buttons aren’t pulled and pushed by Honest To Goodness Flesh And Bone Human Beings ®. It also doesn’t mean that it’s a group of songwriters and musicians content to phone it in just for the sake of making music together. Never ones’ to repeat themselves, every North Elementary record is a permutation of what’s come before. That’s especially the case with their most recent release, “Lou Takes” where songwriting and lead vocal duties are, for the first time, split equally among Betty Rupp, Sean Parker, and John Harrison.

The band may have started as a mode of transport for Harrison’s songwriting, but it’s morphed beyond that now. The album kicks off with the Rupp written single “Again and Again” where Betty sings strongly over soft reverse delayed guitars “I’m so glad I found my bed, and I’m so grateful for all I had. And when I’m feeling so forlorn, please just rock me to the break of dawn.” This record does, in fact, rock until the break of dawn. Betty has stepped away from the role of keyboardist to play guitar with Sean and John, and that’s allowed them to mine triple threat territory where they deftly weave together leads and harmonies alongside their distinct voices.

That three talented and idiosyncratic songwriters can come together and release such a cohesive album is no small feat. Every song on “Lou Takes” wholly evokes the person who penned it, and every song on the album sounds perfectly like North Elementary. It takes truly knowing the people you create with to approach that goal, but it takes deeply caring about them to achieve it.

Stevie
New North Carolina trio Stevie brings together guitarists Chesley Kalnen (Case Sensitive, Ravary) and Lindsey Sprague (Daddy Issues, Wayhas) with drummer Amethyst White (Daddy Issues, Trashettes) for a splendid explosion of lo-fi garage-rock, fortified by a femme touch. They recorded their first single in June with Ian Rose of Natural Causes; now is your chance to say you saw them when. - Hopscotch 2018 Staff
